Can I use NDIS Funding for my Holiday?

Let's chat about using your NDIS funds for a holiday. While the NDIS won't cover your vacation expenses, there are still some cool ways to make your trip more accessible and enjoyable.

The short answer is no, the NDIS won't fund your holiday itself. But don't worry, you may still be able to access the usual supports you rely on, even while you're away.

The NDIS covers items and services that are reasonable and necessary for your disability support needs, as long as they align with your NDIS goals. Travel expenses like flights, accommodation, meals, and activities are things everyone needs to pay for when they go on holiday, so they aren't covered by your NDIS plan.

What the NDIS can help with is support that enables you to enjoy your travel experience and stay independent. This could include support for social or community participation. For example, if you usually have a support worker at home, you could arrange to have one with you while you're away to assist you during your trip. Some examples are:

Transport Assistance

If you cannot use public transport due to your disability, the NDIS may provide funding for transport assistance. This can include funding for a support worker to transport you to and from activities, or for using taxis, Ubers, or other transport services.

Support Worker Accompaniment

You may be eligible for funding to have a support worker accompany you on your trip to assist with activities and ensure your independence. This can be claimed under the "Assistance with social and community participation" support item in your CORE budget.

Travel Costs for Support Workers

If a support worker is required to travel with you, you can claim for their travel time, petrol costs, parking fees, and tolls. These costs must be agreed upon in advance and comply with the NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits

Is NDIS funding available for overseas travel?

There’s no specific “holiday budget” within the NDIS. If you're travelling, you’d still rely on your everyday support, just in a different location. So, you might be able to use NDIS funding for support while abroad, but it depends on things like how long you’ll be away.

In most cases, NDIS assistance for overseas travel is available for up to six weeks. After that, or if there are any extra costs, you’d need to use your own funds. You can request an extension of this six-week period by getting in touch with the NDIS and letting them know your plans—how long you’re travelling, why you’re going, and what support you'll need. It’s not a guarantee, but it’s worth asking if you’ll be away for longer.

Are holiday rentals counted as NDIS short-term accommodation?

Short-term accommodation and respite care are meant for providing a break from regular care arrangements, not for holidays. They’re intended to support both the participant and the carer, not to cover the cost of a vacation.

That said, if your accommodation expenses are related to your disability, you might be able to claim additional costs, but holiday accommodation itself isn’t covered.

Can I use NDIS travel allowance for holidays?

Unfortunately, no. NDIS travel funds are for your regular, everyday needs, not for holiday-related expenses.

That said, if you're working with support workers, they can claim for travel costs related to the support they provide, such as time spent traveling to your home or accompanying you to community activities. But, travel costs specifically related to your holiday (like plane tickets or accommodation) aren’t covered.

Tips for a Stress-Free Overseas Holiday Experience

Travel can be a lot of fun, and it can be part of your NDIS goals too. With a little preparation, you can make your holiday smooth and stress-free. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Currency Difference if Traveling Overseas:

When traveling abroad, keep in mind that invoices for any items or supports bought overseas need to be submitted in AUD. Using a credit card is a good idea, as it automatically converts the cost into Aussie dollars, making things easier for you to track.

Plan Ahead with Your Support Worker:

If you're bringing a support worker along, be sure to talk about what level of care they'll provide during your trip. It’s a good idea to set expectations upfront, including daily hours and any extra costs. And, be sure to get everything in writing!

Travel with a Group for Cheaper Rates:

Traveling with others who need support can make things both cheaper and more enjoyable! You could share the costs of support workers and even accommodation. Some companies offer group holiday packages, or you could organize it yourself if you're up for the challenge!

Get Comprehensive Travel Insurance:

While the NDIS won’t cover your travel insurance, it’s still a good idea to get a solid policy for your trip. This can protect you in case of unexpected things like lost luggage, delays, or medical emergencies. Be sure to read the fine print to find the best policy for your needs.

Managers Can Help with Your NDIS Funds

To figure out if you can use your NDIS funding while traveling, it’s helpful to check whether your plan includes the support you need. If you’re a plan-managed participant, you’ll have more flexibility in choosing both registered and unregistered providers, which is great when it comes to getting the right assistance for your trip.

Whether you’re heading overseas or staying closer to home, a little time away can be a great way to recharge, try new things, and meet new people. The last thing you want is to worry about how to manage your NDIS funding while you’re away.
